Scientists challenge EPA standards. (Environmental Protection Agency)

More than 17,000 studies on dioxin now appear in the scientific literature. While the word dioxin' actually refers to over 210 different compounds, the majority of this work has focused on the health effects of 2,3,7,8,tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). Despite the apparent abundance of data, this well-studied molecule is likely to remain at the centre of controversy for some time to come. Indeed, each new study seems to complicate the issue, often providing ammunition for both sides.

While recent evidence from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health may force the US Environmental Protection Agency to reassess dioxin's carcinogenicity (see C&I 1991, 67) other scientists are challenging the very basis of the EPA:s approach to risk assessment for dioxin.
